“Traditionally, IT systems in agencies have been about the transaction, but more and more, data is essential for mission success,” said Bob Jeffcott, Principal Systems Engineer with Software AG Government Solutions. With that, he added that “new technology and new expectations have created increasing demands for dynamic, real-time access to data”, which have been bolstered by AI and AI-specific datasets. One step toward understanding how agency data and mission is strengthened by AI (and other emerging technologies) is how the U.S. Federal Government is defining AI. They define it as “A machine-based system that can, for a set of human-defined objectives, make predictions, recommendations, or decisions influencing real or virtual environments.”

Building on this definition, DGI brought together three experts to go into further detail about how data is being used with the newest in IT systems to support agency missions, including:

  • OMB M-24-10 agency actions and technical requirements
  • How to utilize AI Community of Practice
  • The journey of Citizen 360, Data Lakes, Streaming Analytics, and AI
  • Leveraging Legacy Data
  • Using data and transparency to build trust for the government
  • An example of data transparency with USAspending.gov as a public platform on government spending
  • What the Fiscal Data University is and who it’s designed for
  • Challenges of building a culture of open data
  • What opportunities lie ahead with AI
