Federal agencies closed FY2025 with 339,671 backlogged FOIA requests—27% more than at the close of FY2024—and they face this backlog with roughly 800 fewer full-time FOIA staff than they had before. Twenty-two agencies finished the year above the 1,000-request threshold that obliges them to file a reduction plan with the Department of Justice. As the backlog is expected to grow and become even more unmanageable, roughly one in five federal agencies have brought artificial intelligence (AI) into FOIA processing, without fully knowing what it takes to create a process where AI-powered redaction will survive a requester appeal or court review.

To safely accelerate workflows without sacrificing legal defensibility, agencies need explainable, auditable and contestable AI infrastructure that empowers FOIA, records, and legal teams to automate repetitive review tasks while keeping human oversight firmly in control. By aligning advanced machine learning with strict federal compliance standards, IT and information governance professionals can confidently deploy scalable solutions that withstand judicial scrutiny and significantly reduce processing backlogs.

Register today for this webinar to learn:

  • The primary drivers of FOIA and Privacy Act backlogs and the specific review stages where AI-assisted redaction reduced processing time
  • How to apply AI-assisted redaction to common FOIA exemptions, while keeping a human reviewer accountable for every decision
  • Where AI-assisted redaction can be applied to adjacent use cases, including congressional correspondence, OIG investigative records and Privacy Act responses.
